You can establish your own flower/foliage preserving facility to add on to your existing dried operation, or, you can enter the small business world producing your own salable product. Coulee Pickings has researched the glycerin preserving process and prepared a manual containing the instructions on how to set up a medium sized facility. Information on the systemic and immersion process is contained in the manual. There is a list of equipment, assembly, and plans to build drying racks or drying rooms.
A building with temperature control is essential. Humidity control may be needed if you live in a humid area. Depending on the scope of the operation, the space you require will vary from a few thousand square feet to several thousand.
A preserving system can begin as a small, low investment operation and can be easily expanded to meet new and increased demands. The supplies and equipment for an entry level system will be $2000.00 to $5,000.00. There is a one time license fee.
The concentrates used in the preservation of botanicals are purchased from Coulee Pickings. This concentrate is diluted with water to prepare the systemic and immersion formulations. Dyes are added to produce the desired color. The dyes are also available from Coulee Pickings.
The manual contains a list of plants that can be preserved with the respective formulations. It details the amount of preservative required and removes the trail and error usually encountered when attempting to establish your own system.
You can operate without a land base. Where regulations permit, botanicals may be gathered from roadsides and open areas. If you prefer to grow your own, many cultivated species are listed.
